A Music Release Marketing Plan for Independent Artists

A release plan gives a song more than one day to find its audience. Instead of posting everywhere at once and hoping for a spike, you can build a sequence of moments that help listeners discover, understand, and return to the music. The plan does not need a large team; it needs a consistent story and a realistic schedule.

Four to six weeks before release

Set the foundation. Finalise release details, artwork, credits, artist profile, and your landing destination. Decide on the story behind the track: where it came from, what it means, or what feeling it is meant to carry. That story will shape your captions, videos, press note, and ad creative.

Prepare a compact asset kit: cover art in the right formats, a short vertical video, lyric or behind-the-scenes clips, a clean artist bio, and a concise pitch. You do not need dozens of assets. You need enough variation to communicate the same identity across several touchpoints.

Two weeks before release

Begin inviting your existing audience into the process. Share a snippet, explain the inspiration, or show a visual detail from the project. Give people an easy way to save the release or join a reminder list. Focus on conversation rather than treating every post as a sales announcement.

Release week

Make the first day clear and frictionless. Pin the primary link, update your profiles, publish your strongest content, and speak directly to people who already know your work. If you are using paid promotion, align the creative with one action: listen, save, follow, or visit a specific destination.

  • Share one main release message instead of competing announcements.
  • Reply to early comments and messages while attention is highest.
  • Track which content, markets, and messages generate quality engagement.

Keep the song moving after launch

Many artists stop marketing after the first weekend, just as the audience begins to form an opinion. Continue with live versions, stories behind specific lyrics, fan reactions, creative remixes, and new visual angles. Review your results after several weeks and use them to guide the next release. A catalog grows when every campaign leaves behind an audience you can speak to again.
